Save the date wedding announcement etiquette

The first time I got a save the date wedding announcement, I was a little bit irritated. It seems like every year, there is a new trend in proper etiquette. It should be enough for me to get one wedding card, send in my RSVP, and attend. I shouldn't get something months in advance asking me to plan ahead and commit to something that is eight months away. I don't know what I'll be doing in eight months. I can't be expected to save the date for that long. It really seemed like a ridiculous request!

Thinking it over, however, I realize that save the date wedding cards are really a good idea. Of all the events that you will have in your life, your wedding is probably the only one that you don't want anyone to miss. It's true that it is always nice to see your friends, but it is especially important on your wedding day. After all, there is no more joyous celebration that you are likely to go through in your entire life. Your wedding celebrates the fact that you have found the love of your life, someone that you are going to live with for the rest of your days.

In light of this, save the date wedding cards are a good idea. Yes, they are sent obnoxiously early, and they make unreasonable demands on you, but this is exactly the point. People grow up and move away to all corners of the earth. Save the date wedding cards are an attempt to do the impossible: to bring everyone together for a certain special day so that they can celebrate a joyous reunion between two people. Anything that makes it easier to accomplish this goal is a good idea. After all, you only get married once – or least you hope to. Save the date magnets help bring as many people as can come to celebrate that joyous occasion.

One of the great things about save the date wedding cards is that they give you a chance to be whimsical and funny. Wedding invitations, after all, need to be fairly serious. They are from an earlier era, and are meant to convey the sacredness of the occasion. Wedding save the date cards, by contrast, are a hip and recent addition. They can reflect their time. They can be funny and irreverent. Save the date wedding notices are your one opportunity to express your personality in your wedding planning. And if you make them funny, more people are likely to remember to save the date!
